Otoshiya Hachimangu Shrine

This shrine was founded in 1345 CE (Shōhei 1) by Akamatsu Sadanori. It served as the guardian shrine (Chinju-sha) of Himeji Castle and was revered by successive castle lords. Visitors can enjoy a view of Himeji Castle from the shrine grounds.

Otoshiya Hachimangu Shrine is located to the northwest of Himeji Castle and is a historic guardian shrine. Many visitors combine a visit here with a tour of Himeji Castle. Since the shrine is situated on the mid-slope of Otoshiya Hill, climbing stairs is required. While it can be sweaty in summer, the view of Himeji Castle from the summit is excellent. The night view is also beautiful. During the Yoiyake Festival (disaster-averting festival), the area becomes lively with vendors selling manju (sweet buns) and anago-zushi (conger eel sushi). Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) are issued at the office of Mizoo Shrine.
