The shrine's origins date back to 829 CE (Tencho 6), when Emperor Yamato Takeru was enshrined at Arayama. In 1629 CE (Kan'ei 6), it was relocated to its current site. After Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshiie defeated Abe no Sadanori during the Former Nine Years' War, the shrine was designated as one of the Seven Shrines of the Chiu District. It was classified as a Kosha (village shrine) in 1946 CE (Showa 21).
