The temple was named 'Ottodera' because the Brahmin monk Sojo enshrined the left eye of the Buddha in the area where the current Rokkaku-do stands; the character 'ho' (treasure) was later added to the name. In the late Muromachi period, it received donations from the Uesugi clan, and in the early Edo period, it was deeply supported by Murakami Yoshinari.
