Renshoji Temple
長野市南長池858
A Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha (True Pure Land School, Hongwanji branch) temple located in Nagano City, with the mountain name Yanagibara-zan. The main hall houses an image of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), and the Taishi-do hall within the grounds enshrines a statue of Prince Shotoku, traditionally attributed to the sculptor Unkei.
History
The temple was founded by Inoue Raiko of the Shinano Genji clan, who established Shofukuji in 1231 CE (Kanki 3). During the tenure of the 11th abbot, Ryoshun, the temple relocated to its current site to escape the dangers of the Battle of Kawagunakijima. Under the 12th abbot, Gyoshin, the temple received the character 'ren' (lotus) from Jōnyū and was renamed Kōrenji. It was rebuilt on its present site in 1742 CE (Kanpō 2).
