The temple was founded in 1582 CE (Tensho 10) when Sohon Suiji Shonin, during the revival of Kogawa-ji, relocated the Jogyo Nembutsudo (Constant Practice Nembutsu Hall) to this site. In 1669 CE (Kanbun 9), Zen'nin Shonin enshrined the statues of Kannon and Jizai Bodhisattva. It was later revived during the Genroku era by Abe Buzen-no-kami Tadayoshi. The temple has been known as Renzoji since 1941 CE (Shōwa 16).
