Initially named 'Ishizumi Hachiman-gū,' it was renamed 'Rikyū Hachiman-gū' in 1697 CE (Genroku 10) after losing a naming dispute with the shrine on Mount Otoko. This site was also the location of a detached palace (rikyū) of Emperor Saga.
