Construction began in the 9th year of Tenryaku (959 CE) by Minamoto no Tsunemoto for the purpose of appeasing the spirit of Taira no Masakado and ensuring the peace of the nation. The various halls were completed in the 1st year of Tentoku (957 CE). The temple was later revived as part of the Engaku-ji school of the Rinzai sect and was re-established in the 4th year of Hōei (1707 CE) by Shunzan Eshō. During the Edo period, it was designated as one of the Jingūji (shrine-attached temples) of Nanmiya Grand Shrine. It is currently a temple of the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect.
