Founded in 1624 as a hermitage for Kasuga Ono, the wet nurse of Tokugawa Iemitsu. In 1630, the temple welcomed the monk Ikawa as its abbot and adopted the name Tenzakuzan Rinshoin, using Kasuga Ono's dharma name. During the Meiji era, the Philosophy Institute, the predecessor of Toyo University, was established within the temple grounds.
