It originated as Ryogoin, a sub-temple (tato) of Myoken-ji, which was founded in 1321 CE (Genko 1) by Nichizo as the first dojo in Kyoto. It was revived in 1416 CE (Eicho 23) by Nichitsu and given the name Ritsuhon-ji. After being destroyed by fire during the Tenmon Hokke Rebellion, it was rebuilt in 1544 CE (Tenmon 13) in Shinmachi Sanjo and relocated to its current location near Teramachi Imadegawa in 1594 CE (Bunroku 3).
