Founded by Ryogen, the Yuigan Gogyoin temple absorbed and merged with Rozan-ji in 1368 CE (Ouan 1), becoming a place of study for the four sects of Tendai, Esoteric Buddhism, Precepts, and Pure Land. During Oda Nobunaga's burning of Mount Hiei, the temple was spared from damage due to the efforts of Akechi Mitsuhide. It was relocated to its current location in connection with Toyotomi Hideyoshi's construction of the Teramachi district. Reconstructed by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji, it became independent as the Tendai Enjo sect in 1948.
