Founded in 1112 CE (Ten'ei 3) by the monk Kangu Sozu from Chikurin-in on Mount Hiei. In 1184 CE (Genryaku 1), the monk Houjou Jujo moved to the temple and planned its reconstruction and revival at its current location. During the Kamakura period, it received the protection of Minamoto no Yoritomo. In the Sengoku period, it was heavily utilized as a prayer site by the Takeda and Uesugi clans.
