Founded during the Tenpyo era of the Nara period by the monk Gyoki under an imperial edict from Emperor Shomu. In the sixth year of the Koun era (815 CE), Kukai stayed here for 21 days to practice asceticism. The temple was named 'Chikawazan' because its landscape resembled the sacred mountain in India. During the Muromachi period, it flourished under the patronage of the Miyoshi clan. Although it was repeatedly destroyed by war and fire, it was repeatedly rebuilt to achieve its current form.
