The temple was founded in 1529 CE (Kyōroku 2) by Maiono Naomori as a protective measure for his castle, with Tōgen Shūgaku serving as the founding abbot. It was originally a Tenda school temple but later became part of the Rinzai Myoshin-ji school, becoming a sub-temple of Shūyūji in Takayama. After the temple burned down during the tenure of the 10th abbot, it was relocated to its current site and rebuilt under the 11th abbot.
