Founded by Gyouki during the Tenpyou era, the main image of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) is traditionally said to be his work. It was once a massive complex with seven main halls, but it was destroyed by fire during Oda Nobunaga's conquest of Shingisan Castle. It was rebuilt in 1651 CE (Keian 4). The reconstruction was on a much smaller scale than the original, and the current grounds cover only 123 tsubo (approximately 407 square meters).
