Based on a hermitage named Nansoan established by Ko-gaku Mune-naga in 1526, the temple was founded in 1557 when Miyoshi Nagayoshi requested Dai-rin So-kō to open the temple to mourn the soul of his father, Miyoshi Motonaga. It was destroyed by fire during the Sakai Boshin (Sakai Burning) in 1615 but was relocated to its current site and revived in 1619 by Sesshū Sōhō.
