The temple was founded in 1699 CE (Genroku 12) by the monk Setsugai. It suffered a decline in fortunes and the loss of many documents due to the Ansei Great Earthquake of 1855. In the early Shōwa period, land was secured, and in 1965, the main hall and other buildings were completed.
