Ryusen-ji Temple on Mount Omine
〒638-0431 奈良県吉野郡天川村洞川494
A head temple of the Daigo branch of the Shingon school, Ryusen-ji is known as the starting point for the pilgrimage to the summit of Mount Omine. It is renowned as a training ground for Shugendo (mountain asceticism), and within its grounds flows a stream of purifying water known as the 'Dragon's Mouth.'
History
The temple's origins are said to date to around the 4th year of Emperor Junwu's reign (704 CE), when En no Gyōja discovered a spring and enshrined the Eight Great Dragon Kings beside it. It has a history of being revitalized after a great serpent was defeated by Seihō, a saint of this temple's lineage. During the Meiji era, it became one of the protective sub-temples of Mount Omine-ji. The temple was destroyed in the 1946 Dōgawa Fire but was rebuilt in 1960, at which time the ban on women entering the grounds was also lifted.
