It is said to have originated from Man'ganji, which was founded in 783 CE (Enryaku 2) by Shodo. It is believed to have been designated as Ryuzoji to ward off evil from the northeast direction when Kasama Dozen built Maebashi Castle in the mid-14th century. After burning down in 1742 CE (Kanpo 2), it was rebuilt in 1746 CE (Enkyo 3).
