The oldest temple in Yamaguchi City, Ryuzoji is a Shingon Buddhism (Mikura-ha sect) temple and also serves as the 17th station of the Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. It is renowned as a scenic spot featuring a giant ginkgo tree designated as a Natural Monument and a strolling garden attributed to the famous painter Sesshu.

Legend holds that in the 2nd year of the Buni era (702 CE), En no Gyoja discovered the Yoshiki Waterfall, invited the deity Kumano Gongen to the site, and performed a Goma fire ritual. In the 13th year of the Tenpyo era (741 CE), the monk Giki carved a statue of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Handed Kannon), constructed a seven-hall monastery complex, and named the temple Ryuzoji. After falling into disrepair in the early Meiji period, the temple was revived as a place of worship in 1896 (Meiji 29) through the dedicated efforts of Miyanara Taikan.
