The shrine was founded in 1187 CE (Bunji 3), when the ancestor of the Ryuzoshi clan invited a branch spirit (bunrei) from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. During the Keicho period, it was relocated to its current vicinity during the construction of Saga Castle by Nabeshima Katsushige. Around 1901, the grounds were expanded and moved again; consequently, the shrine is no longer located on Hachiman Street.
