Sōtō Zen Buddhist Sect Head Temple Sōjiji
〒230-8686 神奈川県横浜市鶴見区鶴見2丁目1−1
Alongside Eiheiji, it is one of the central temples (head temples) of the Sōtō Zen Buddhist Sect in Japan. As a Zen training ground, it receives monks from both domestic and international locations who come to practice.
History
This Zen temple was founded in 1321 by Keizan Jōkin in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. In 1322, it received an imperial edict from Emperor Go-Daigo designating it as an official temple and head temple, thereby publicly proclaiming the Sōtō Zen Buddhist Sect. Following a fire in 1898, the temple relocated to its current location in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama City, in 1911.
