In 1064 CE (Kōhei 7), following an imperial decree, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi enshrined the spirit of the Hachiman deity to pray for victory in the campaign to pacify the eastern provinces and for national peace and prosperity. The local residents called it Sagiya Daimyōjin (Great Deity of Sagiya), which later became the name of the area. It is the only shrine in the ward that was granted a stipend of over seven koku by the Edo Shogunate.
