Founded in 1365 by Hōson Gōan Chitetsu at the foot of Ryōkōin, it was the oldest temple in Uwajima City. In 1625, before the arrival of Date Hidemune, it was relocated to its current location in Marubō, and later transferred to the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect. In 1945, the main hall, storehouse, and other buildings were destroyed by war damage, but the mountain gate, bell tower, and Enma Hall remain.
