Known as a temple founded by Harube Masanari (Hanzo), a hereditary vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu and one of the Tokugawa Sixteen Generals. Masanari took monastic vows and adopted the name Sainin to offer prayers for the spirit of Tokugawa Nobuyasu, who died a violent death. He built a memorial stupa at An'in-in and spent his remaining years there. Later, due to the expansion of Edo Castle, the temple was relocated to its current site around 1634 and rebuilt.
