The shrine's origins date back to 1574 (Tensho 2), when Maeda Toshiie enshrined deities invited from Kasuga Taisha in Nara. It was formerly known as 'Kasuga of Hokuji Temple.' Due to being washed away by a flood in 1768 (Meiwa 5), the current shrine buildings were erected at this site as a local tutelary deity (Ujigami) with prayers for protection against disasters and calamities. It was renamed Kasuga Shrine in 1869 (Meiji 2) and took its current name, Sakigawa Shrine, in 1873 (Meiji 6).
