Its founding is said to date back to the reign of Emperor Nintoku. It is believed to have begun when Takefukikuma no Mikoto enshrined the revered spirit of Emperor Ōjin during the subjugation of the two-faced Shuten-dōji. The shrine buildings were rebuilt during the Muromachi period. Although the shrine suffered in the Great Fire of Takayama during the Meiji era, it was subsequently restored, and the current shrine buildings were constructed. In 1981 CE (Shōwa 56), the periodic grand festival was revived by inviting over 300 shrines from the central region of Hida Province.
