It was initially dedicated as Awajimaru Daimyojin. In the ninth year of Bunka (1812), it was renamed Sakurayama Daimyojin, after which the spirits of the Nanbu clan were gradually enshrined together. During the Meiji era, the current shrine buildings were constructed at the site of the former third bailey and Hatsumori-shita Kurwa of Morioka Castle, where the deities were re-enshrined.
