According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 704 CE (Keiun 1). During the Edo period, it was revered by the Iwaki Hira Domain; when it was destroyed by a lightning strike, the domain lord rebuilt the shrine buildings, and subsequent lords carried out renovations. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it was designated as a Gōsha (a shrine of local importance).
