The founding date is unknown, but it is said that around 804 CE (Enryaku 23), Sakamoto no Tamuramaro rebuilt the shrine buildings as an offering of thanks after praying to the deities of Takehara Sanko and defeating bandits. In 1600 CE (Keicho 5), the Kumano Shrine was relocated to the northeast vicinity. In 1911 CE (Meiji 44), it was merged with the village shrine Kumano Shrine and renamed Sanko Kumano Shrine.
