Founded in 1502 CE (Bunkitsu 2) by Fukai Daitoku. It was originally a Shingon Buddhist temple but later converted to the Nishi Hongwanji branch of Jodo-shu. In 1640 CE (Kan'ei 17), it was relocated to its current location in Teramachi by order of Tokugawa Tadaaki.
