The temple's origin is said to date back to 702 CE, when Emperor Monmu fully recovered from an illness due to the spiritual power of Benzaiten and ordered the monk Kakuen from Yamato to construct the hall. Although it was destroyed by fire during a military conflict involving Minamoto no Noriyori in the late Heian period, the various halls were restored by the Zen monk Mubun Gensho during the Eiroku era (1394-1428), and the temple converted to the Zen sect. Subsequently, the Three-Story Pagoda was rebuilt in 1531, and the Benzaiten Palace was reconstructed in 1554 by Hon'gen Ketsu.
