History
This area was ruled by Emperor Keitai, and tradition holds that the shrine was founded by the imperial court after his death to honor him. The current shrine originated in 1540 CE (Tenbun 9), when a sacred object that had floated down the Hyogo River was retrieved and enshrined at Seichi-in Temple. In 1544 CE (Tenbun 13), a small shrine was built within the grounds, and Sanno-gu was established in 1564 CE (Eiroku 7). In 1870 CE (Meiji 3), it was renamed Sakuraniwa Shrine, and in 1872 CE (Meiji 5), Suimon-gu was merged into it. In 1885 CE (Meiji 18), it was renamed Mikuni Shrine.
