Sara no-ji (Tendai Sect Eisho-ji)
福崎町高岡1912
Known as "Sara no-ji" (Temple of the Saraca), this Tendai sect temple is home to approximately 200 Saraca trees of various sizes. It boasts cultural properties, including a garden designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by Hyogo Prefecture and a standing statue of the Buddha Shakyamuni dating back to the Hakuhō period.
History
It is said to have been founded during the Hakui era (650-654 CE) by the sage Dōdō, who came from India, and is considered the oldest temple in Fukuzaki. During the Kamakura period, it became a place of prayer for the Koyama clan and was revived in 1295 CE (Bun'ei 2) by the high priest Yūun. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it served as a place of prayer for the Akamatsu clan and was re-established with the Sacred Avalokiteshvara, invited from Kyoto, as its principal deity.
