It is said to have been founded at the foot of Ohji-hara, the birthplace of Emperor Jimmu. Some accounts suggest it was relocated to escape volcanic eruptions from Mount Kirishima. After repeated destruction by eruptions and subsequent relocations, the shrine was moved to its current site in 1610 CE (Keicho 15). Although it once served as a branch shrine of Miyazaki Jingu, it has since regained its independence and is now listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
