It is traditionally said to have been founded by Ashikaga Takauji, with the monk Muso Soseki serving as the founding abbot. The temple is believed to have been established in 1333 CE (Shokei 2) or 1351 CE (Kannin 2). In the early Edo period, it became a branch temple of Myoshinji. A fire in 1682 CE (Ten'na 2) destroyed most of the complex, but reconstruction began during the Jōkyō era and the temple grounds were completed in 1731 CE (Kyōhō 16).
