It is said that Kukai established the temple during the Daian era (806-810 CE) and enshrined 500 Arhats in a cave on the north side. The temple enshrines an Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, attributed to the monk Gyoki who visited the area during the Yoro era (717-724 CE), located on the Oku no Gyoki Rock (Gyoki Rock in the back). It is considered one of the Seven Kannon of Kyushu. During the Edo period, it was classified as a sub-temple belonging to a village temple, and the Kannon Hall was constructed in 1785 CE (Tenmei 5).
