According to tradition, in the 4th century, a monk named Hadama (Nakama) obtained a golden statue of Jizai Kannon from the pool at the base of Nachi Falls and installed it as the principal image. From the medieval to early modern periods, it functioned as a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) training ground integrated with Kumano Nachi Taisha (Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine), reflecting the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, and served as the first station of the Saikoku Sanjusan. In 1874 (Meiji 7), it separated from Kumano Nachi Taisha, became an independent Tendaishu temple, and was named Seiganto-ji.
