Established by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu as the mausoleum of Matsudaira Nobuyasu, his eldest son, who was forced to commit seppuku during the era of the Oda-Tokugawa alliance. It is a branch temple of Chion-in in the Jodo-shu sect. Its mountain name (sangō) is Shin'kō-yama and its court name (in-gō) is Chōan-in.
