It is said to have been founded by Prince Shōtoku and was revived in the mid-Kamakura period by Ukita-bu Jitsujō and Ninshō. It received the character "dai" (great) from Ashikaga Takauji and was renamed Dai Fukuda-ji. In 1662, with the support of Matsudaira Sadayoshi, it was rebuilt at its current location.
