History
The temple traces its origins to Butshin-in, founded at the request of Empress Sennin. After Emperor Saga's abdication, it was used as a residence for imperial princes and princes of the blood. It was later revived by Teru-ku Shin-nichi and granted the name Seiwa-in. Following its destruction in the Imperial Palace fire, it was rebuilt at its current location as a Shingon temple by Emperor Go-Mizunoo.
