It is said to have been founded in 1192 CE (Kenkyu 3) when the court official Susono Nagahira invited Eison to establish the temple. In 1420 CE (Oei 27), Emperor Go-Komatsu bestowed the imperial mountain name 'Ryugo-zan (Dragon-Protecting Mountain).' Throughout the medieval period, it flourished as the family temple of the Chikugo Susono clan. It was later converted to the Soto sect.
