山城の国右京権之頭平ノ好覚が法然上人の弟子となり、陸奥国福岡大村松に草庵を建立して創建した。天正18年の九戸政実の乱で草庵を焼失したため盛岡の本誓寺と同居し、後に本誓寺十六代賢昌の誘いにより浄土真宗に改めた。
