The temple was originally built by Ochi no Kami Oki by imperial decree from Emperor Tenji. Kukai performed rituals and restored the temple complex. In the early Meiji period, it was revived by the monk Yu-ren. A mountain fire in 1947 (Shōwa 22) destroyed the entire mountain, but the main statue and the statue of the Great Master survived. The main hall was rebuilt in 1953 (Shōwa 28).
