Shana-in Bell Tower
長浜市宮前町13
A temple of the Tozan school of Shingon Buddhism located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, originally established as the Gakutoji (Academic Head Temple) of Shihoshoji.
History
Established in 814 CE (Kōnin 5) by Kūkai as the Gakutoji of Shihoshoji, the temple was initially named Shana-in. During the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, the six Tōtō (sub-temples) of Shihoshoji were abolished, but this temple, as the Gakutoji, was preserved and renamed Shana-in. Subsequently, with the support of donations, the current main hall underwent major repairs and renovations in 1942.
