Shinano Kokubunji Niomon (Shinano Kokubunji Guardian Gate)

This temple is a successor to Shinano Kokubunji, which was established during the Nara period by imperial decree from Emperor Shōmu. Temple records state that it was destroyed by fire in 937 CE (Jōhei 8) during the battle between Taira no Masakado and Taira no Sadamori, though it is also believed to have fallen into ruin due to the decline of the Ritsuryō system in the late Heian period. During the Edo period, it was known as Jōruiyama Shingen-in Kokubunji. It is also known as the site where a meeting was held between Sanada Masayuki and the Tokugawa army during the First Battle of Ueda.
