The shrine was founded in September of 715 CE (Reiki 1) in the Takidani valley east of Nagano. It was destroyed by fire during the Nanbokucho period in 1336 CE (Kenmu 3) but was subsequently rebuilt. In the early Edo period, it was relocated to its current site. Further reconstructions took place in 1662 CE (Kanbun 2) and 1743 CE (Kanpō 3).
