The temple's origins are said to date back to 789 CE (Enryaku 8), when Ki Kozami established a hall after obtaining military provisions. It was once counted as one of the four great Tendai temples of the Kozuke region. The temple was relocated to its current site at the end of the Kamakura period and was revived during the Shoto period (1711-1716 CE).
