History

Founded during the Kōan period (1278–1288 CE). Even after the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the statue of Hachiman Daibosatsu (Great Bodhisattva Hachiman), which bore strong characteristics of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, was burned. Its ashes were buried within the shrine grounds and enshrined as the Genmi-sama (Original Palace Deity).
