History

In 1821 CE (Bunsei 4), Sasaki Nagato established the shrine as Asahi Shrine, enshrining Ukanomitama-no-kami, Sumiyoshi-ōkami, and Kanayamahiko-ōkami. Later, by order of Sakai Bugyō Mizuno Wakasa-no-kami, Amaterasu-ōmikami and Toyouke-ōmikami were designated as the principal deities, while Ukanomitama-no-kami, Sumiyoshi-ōkami, and Kanayamahiko-ōkami became subsidiary deities, and the shrine was renamed Shinmei Shrine. The shrine was completely destroyed by fire during the Great Air Raid of 1945 but was rebuilt in 1997.
