According to tradition, it was founded in 594 CE (Suiko 2) with Monobe Shinpuku serving as the patron. A sculpted head dating back to the Nara period has been transmitted to the temple, and the temple ruins at Shinpusuji Higatani are considered the oldest ancient temple ruins in Mikawa Province. The entire mountain complex burned down in 1151 CE (Ninpei 1) but was restored in 1494 CE (Meiyo 3).
